Technology PowerPoint

I made a presentation about the different types of technology that teachers can use in their classroom.

Promethian Boards

This is a YouTube video about a school that uses Promethian boards, or SMART boards. The video discusses the advantages of using the boards and the affects that they have on the students.

Technology in the Classroom

Just like technology is evolving in our day-to-day lives, it is also evolving in the classroom. As stated by Leary (n.d.), “teachers use technology to display information, create charts, monitor students, to engage students.” There are many different forms of technology that can be used in the classroom to enrich student learning, as well as engagement.

Many years ago, overhead projectors were popular for displaying information to the class. A teacher could teach a lesson by using a blank transparency and a wet-erase marker. A transparency could also be made from a worksheet to show to the class. Now, document cameras, such as the ELMO or Lumens, are used in classes to replace overhead projectors. “A document camera can magnify books or papers for all the students to see.” (Preston, n.d.)This is convenient because the teacher does not have to make a transparency before teaching the lesson. Instead, she can use a sheet of paper, or a book, to show the class. This can be useful for situations such as: reading a book to the class, doing a worksheet as a class, or the students could use it during stations as a form of engagement.

Another useful form of technology is an interactive white board, or SMART Board. It is a white board that requires a special type of marker to use. “Interactive media that can display website pages and software programs so the class can see the program's applications.” (Leary, n.d.) An example of this being integrated into a classroom is when first graders are learning how to spell. There is a software program that shows part of a word, such as think, and the alphabet is on the side of the page. The student has to use the special type of marker to drag the letter to the word and then the feedback is shown. This allows the student to be engaged in learning how to spell, as well as learning how to use technology, instead of doing worksheets.

The Internet is also used in classrooms. “The Internet can provide resources and websites for practicing skills and monitoring student progress. It also has resources for teachers pertaining to student management, lesson plans and other teaching matters.” (Leary, n.d.) The Internet can be used as a form of research, instead of looking for your information in books from the library. The student can use a search engine, such as Google, to narrow their searches to find the information they need. Students can also use the Internet to play subject-related games, such as Math and Language Arts. This engages the students while learning and makes it fun.

Wetzel (2009) stated several tips for teachers for when they incorporate technology in their classroom. The first tip is to accept new forms of technology. Teachers should learn about technology that other teachers in the field are using. The second tip is to integrate technology into the content. Teachers should use technology to support the content. One example that he gives is developing podcasts about the content they are learning about. Another example is to always have a backup plan, such as using another website, if there is a problem.

Various forms of technology are used in the classroom today. The forms of technology that were stated are used to support learning in the classroom. The students are engaged with learning and it also supports the content that teachers are presenting to the students.
